A very warm welcome to the Merton Park Primary School website. I am immensely proud to be the Head Teacher of this wonderful, inclusive & high-achieving Primary School.
Situated in the heart of Merton Park on a quiet & safe residential road, children have been attending Merton Park Primary School for nearly 100 years and we continue to foster a joy of learning which will stay with them for life.
We are enormously proud of our school. In everything we do, we strive for the very best to ensure children have a truly memorable primary school experience. There is an emphasis on using the rich range of resources available to us in the local area and beyond, as we believe that this helps to develop lively and enquiring minds and teaches children important life skills.
What makes Merton Park so unique and exceptional?
- Our children are very happy & safe at school. They frequently tell us this is discussions and tell all of our visitors the same. This also shows in our high attendance: we are consistently in the top 10% of schools in England for attendance and also have the best attendance in Merton!
- On joining the school children quickly become an integral part of the community. As a small school there is a caring, family atmosphere where all children are taught the importance of consideration and respect for other people and their beliefs.
- We teach an inclusive knowledge-rich curriculum which exposes children to ambitious content that has been highly specified and well-sequenced. A knowledge-rich curriculum ensures that each moment in school will support children in acquiring the knowledge, skills and cultural capital that they will need to become well-educated citizens of the future. Every historical figure encountered, philosophical idea grappled with, and scientific concept applied, fits neatly into a scheme of learning that holds a sense of purpose and develops logically from lesson to lesson, unit to unit and year to year.
- At Merton Park we want all of our children to reach their full potential both academically and socially in a safe and caring environment. We are extremely proud of our children and proud that they are well-rounded, happy children who have had the very best start to their academic careers. Our results are consistently high across the board from the EYFS to Year 6, in July 2024 we were Significantly Above Average in Phonics, KS2 Reading, KS2 Maths, KS2 Grammar and Writing. The percentage of our children achieving greater depth at the end of year 6 placed us in the top 1% of schools in the country for achievement in reading, maths & grammar.
- Merton Park Primary is a Gold Rights Respecting School and we support the UN Convention on the rights of the child. Children across the school are taught about the articles contained within the convention and they can be seen in every aspect of life at our school.
- We believe that music is a key part of our school. Children have the opportunity to learn musical instruments during the school day from one of our MMF teachers including the guitar, piano and drums. Each class has a weekly music lesson where music is developed through singing, listening, composing (including improvising) and performing. In our music curriculum, different pieces and genres of music are explored as examples of the different musical focus in each unit. For example, in year 4, by listening to Duke Ellington’s ‘Take the ‘A’ Train’, children are able to understand the concept of the ‘off-beat’ in swing music, which is a type of jazz. Music in our curriculum is drawn from a variety of traditions, including western and non-western classical music, folk, and a variety of modern traditions including rock, pop and jazz. Pieces are drawn from all over the world and from periods spanning six centuries. We also provide many opportunities for children to perform music including at Christmas concerts, Production club in the spring term and at our annual talent show. Last year we also participated in the Merton Music Foundation concert at the Royal Albert Hall. We also expose children to music being performed by professionals such as our annual pantomime and the ‘Blues & roots’ concert at Wimbledon Theatre.
- PE and sport are valued and celebrated at Merton Park. We are a member of the Merton School Sports Partnership (MSSP) and we have been awarded a Platinum Sports Mark in recognition for our commitment to physical education & school sports and for achieving the Gold award for at least 5 consecutive years. We also use coaches from MSSP to teach (alongside the class teachers) some PE lessons including gymnastics, rugby, cricket and dance. We participate in lots of competitions including hockey (we are currently the borough runners up), football, athletics, gymnastics (we are currently the borough champions) and dance.
- Educational visits run every term, in each year group, to enhance the learning outside of the classroom. For example, Year 6 visit the Royal Courts of Justice to participate in a mock trial. We also visit the British Museum, Wimbledon BookFest, Morden Hall Park, St. Pauls’ Cathedral, Fulham Palace, Kew Gardens, Science museum & The Greenwich Observatory. In addition, we also take our Y5 & Y6 children to PGL Osmington Bay for a week’s residential. Each year group also visits a place of worship each year to develop our children’s understanding of different faiths for example the Buddhist Temple in Wimbledon, Hindu Temple, Wimbledon Synagogue, Morden Mosque & St. Mary’s Church. We also have many visitors to school to enhance our curriculum including Zoolab, Space Dome, our annual Pantomime and a performance of a classic novel every Easter.
- Children can hold many different roles at Merton Park including being a School Council Member, a House Captain, sports leaders and being a Member of the Merton Pupil Parliament. Our older children also read to younger children and run lunchtime clubs for them too such as origami.
At the end of their Primary School journey, our children leave us to continue their educational journey to Secondary schools including Rutlish, Ricards Lodge, Ursuline, Tiffin School for Boys, Tiffin Girls' School, King's College, Harris Academy Wimbledon, Kingston Grammar, Emmanuel, Wimbledon College, Wimbledon High, Wallington County Grammar School, Whitgift, Wilsons and St Cecilia's.
