Years 5 & 6
Literacy
In Years 5 & 6 we put books at the heart of our learning in literacy and use them to inspire our class topics. Through our topics we will be reading: fiction books, recounts that tell historical stories, biographies that explore journeys and poems that evoke emotions.
We will give the children opportunities to immerse themselves in books and to write in role, exploring ideas through drama and talk. We will teach different writing styles and give the children the chance to develop independent & critical thinking skills as they choose how to present their ideas, opinions, information and arguments most effectively for a range of audiences.
Maths
In maths we will continue to build upon the children’s knowledge and give them the opportunities to become confident mathematicians. We will focus on developing key number skills and facts and show them how these can be applied to more complex problems. We will teach methods they can use with confidence and understanding, encouraging them to use the most effective methods for different contexts. When a child leaves Yr 6 we want to be sure that they have a tool box of good mathematical skills that they can understand, develop and apply with confidence.
